A youthful quest with his beloved younger brother now a long ago event, The Elder, who just moments ago was sure that he was on his death bed, is again, suddenly, in The Unknown, a disoriented man, more lost than he realizes.

He finds that the forest has changed; just as he has grown old, it has grown into a darker, twisted place, its residents recognizable but far more terrifying than they were in his fading memory. The dirt paths between the ash, elm, and oak trees almost feel familiar. Without companions, though, he must be brave for himself, aware that his defense is the lifetime of scholarship that has empowered him with spells. He is no witless, simple-minded fool. He looks to his wizard's staff. There, atop the staff, the feathers of a bluebird, a friend who once flew beside him but is no more. He touches a feather, remembers Beatrice. He walks on. He follows the compass in his heart. The dry leaves stir at his feet.

Late in the day, he finds himself just beyond the edge of the forest in a farmer's recently-harvested field, senses a presence, and from behind him the deep voice of The Harvestmaster speaks: "I told you if you left that you would return to join us someday." Spooky season has officially started, folks!
